About this plant
We provide Plumeria as unrooted cuttings or as grafted plants. Grafted plants will establish and flower faster compared to cuttings. While the roots will take some damage during shipping, they will start growing again when planted in a matter of weeks instead of months compared to the cuttings.

Plumeria /Frangipani ‘Madame Poni’ complete cultivar description
Flower Appearance
Plumeria ‘Madame Poni’ flowers exhibit a striking tri-color “rainbow” pattern. Each bloom is star-shaped, measuring about 3–3.5 inches in diameter (roughly 7.5–9 cm). The petals are long, narrow, and distinctly twisted along their length, giving a unique corkscrew effect.
Coloration is creamy white with vivid yellow (often greenish-yellow) radiating from the center and a bold red band running down one side of each petal. The backside of the petals also shows strong red coloration, enhancing the bloom’s striking look. As the flower ages, it may open with more yellow that fades to white (with the yellow center remaining), but the red stripe stays prominent throughout.
Flowers on immature plants don’t take on the characteristic twisting and curving.
Scent
The fragrance of ‘Madame Poni’ is sweet and pleasant, but generally mild in intensity. Growers describe it as a delicate floral scent – light and not overpowering. The sweet perfume tends to be subtle, detectable up close yet not carrying far from the tree. While not as strong as some other plumerias, the scent is universally regarded as agreeable and fresh, adding a gentle sweet note to its beautiful blooms.
Bloom Keeping Quality
The keeping quality of ‘Madame Poni’ flowers after picking is excellent, one of its standout features. This makes it highly prized for lei-making and floral decorations in Hawaiʻi. The blooms hold up 2–3 times longer than most plumeria varieties once picked, remaining fresh and colorful instead of wilting rapidly.
Their thick, robust petals contribute to this longevity, allowing leis made from ‘Madame Poni’ to stay beautiful for multiple days. In other words, unlike many plumerias whose flowers might limp after a day, ‘Madame Poni’ blossoms retain their form and fragrance for an extended time when used in leis or arrangements. This superior shelf-life has earned the cultivar a reputation as one of the best lei flowers among plumeria enthusiasts.
Growth Habit
‘Madame Poni’ grows as a medium-sized plumeria tree with an upright, moderately spreading form. Its growth habit is medium in vigor – neither compact nor wildly lanky – typically putting on about 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) of growth per year under favorable conditions.
The branching is somewhat open and upright, which gives the tree a pleasing shape that is suitable for landscapes and large containers alike. Leaves are light green, narrow, and pointed (tapering to acuminate tips), complementing the tree’s elegant look.
Overall, it’s considered an easy-to-grow, well-behaved tree: robust enough to reach a respectable size (often 10–15 feet at maturity in tropical climates), yet manageable in structure. Once mature, it is a reliable bloomer, producing a steady supply of flower clusters each season without requiring special care.
Origin
Madame Poni is a Hawaiian cultivar with a bit of mystique regarding its exact beginnings. It is believed to have originated as a selected seedling in Hawaiʻi (of unknown parentage, likely a Plumeria rubra hybrid) during the mid-20th century. The cultivar gained popularity on the island of Oʻahu, especially in the Waiʻanae area – evidenced by one of its nicknames, “Waianae Beauty,” which suggests where it was first noticed or cultivated.
‘Madame Poni’ was esteemed enough to be officially registered with the Plumeria Society of America (PSA) – it holds PSA registration #109.
By the early 1970s, the University of Hawaiʻi’s researchers had included Madame Poni in their collection of important plumeria cultivars, and it was recommended to local nurserymen for wider distribution due to its desirable traits. In summary, Hawaiʻi is the birthplace of this cultivar, and it remains a cherished part of the islands’ plumeria heritage.
Madame Poni is known by an array of other names, reflecting its unique look and Hawaiian roots. Some of its common aliases include ‘Star,’ ‘Corkscrew,’ ‘Curly Holt,’ ‘Waianae Beauty,’ and ‘Ponytail’. These nicknames arose in different circles – for example, ‘Corkscrew’ alludes to its twisted petals, while ‘Waianae Beauty’ points to its origin locale. Gardeners should be aware that these names all refer to the same cultivar.
