About this plant

Example of grafted, rooted Plumeria for saleWe provide Plumeria as unrooted cuttings or as grafted plants. Grafted plants will establish and flower faster compared to cuttings. While the roots will take some damage during shipping, they will start growing again when planted in a matter of weeks instead of months compared to the cuttings.

Plumeria /Frangipani ‘Blue Canyon’ complete cultivar description

Flower Appearance

Blue Canyon’ plumeria blooms in clusters of flowers about 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm) in diameter, displaying a soft lavender-violet hue with a fiery burnt-orange center. The petals overlap slightly in a star-shaped arrangement, and the orange throat often radiates outward onto the petals, creating a striking two-tone effect. This vivid contrast of purple and orange makes the blooms especially eye-catching. In very hot conditions the flowers may take on a subtle bluish cast, although true “blue” plumerias do not exist – their blue tones are actually just shades of violet.

Scent

Blue Canyon’s flowers emit a sweet floral fragrance. The scent is generally described as lovely and sweet, adding to the cultivar’s appeal. While not overpowering, the fragrance is noticeable; some growers even note a hint of citrus or cologne-like character under certain conditions. Overall it’s considered a pleasantly sweet perfume.

Bloom Keeping Quality

Keeping quality (post-picking longevity) of Blue Canyon’s flowers is excellent. The blossoms have thick, sturdy petals that resist wilting and browning, allowing them to stay fresh after picking for an extended time. In fact, the keeping quality is often compared to that of the famed lei-making cultivar ‘Celadine’, meaning Blue Canyon’s blooms can remain vibrant and fragrant for a few days after being picked. This makes them ideal for lei-making and floral decorations, as the flowers retain their beauty and scent when strung or displayed.

Growth Habit

‘Blue Canyon’ grows into a medium-sized plumeria tree with a robust branching habit. It has an average growth rate (about 12–24 inches of new growth per year) and is not overly compact nor overly lanky. One standout feature is that it branches freely – after blooming, it often produces more than the usual three new branch tips, resulting in a fuller, well-branched tree. Mature trees tend to be upright but nicely shaped due to this frequent branching, and they can eventually reach moderate height.

Origin

This cultivar originated in Thailand. It was identified or developed there and later spread to collectors worldwide. Blue Canyon is actually one of several names for the same plant – in Thailand it was initially known as ‘Muang Sa-Ngeam #2’ or ‘Muang Ruangsukdee #2,’ which translate to violet/purple names, and it has also been called ‘Siam Lavender’ and ‘Indonesian Violet’ in different locales.

The variety was popularized under the name ‘Blue Canyon’ in the West, even though its hues are more purple than true blue. Its Thai origin and multiple introductions under various names underline its appeal across different plumeria-growing communities.

Phytosanitary certificate and importer permit

Phyto Sanitary Certificate Your country’s customs will require phytosanitary certificate attached to the order. It is issued by Thai authorities upon inspecting the plants. It will be added to your total on checkout at 19.50USD. We provide it for free for orders with subtotal over 100USD. Do not confuse it with the importer permit described below.
USA: There is a limit of 12 plants you can import without having importer permit issued to you by USDA. If your order is more than 12 plants, please email us your importer permit after ordering. If you don’t have one you can get it here. On the top of that page you will see a drop-down named “Ready to Apply?” and “Select an option”. Select there option “PPQ-587” and proceed with the application. It is easy and free online procedure. You don’t need the importer permit for orders up to 12 plants.
Canada: You can choose Dragon Courier as the shipping option for any number of plants, and no importer permit is needed. They have their own agent in Canada who will take your order through customs using their own importer permit. For other shipping options, you must obtain an importer permit here and email it to us after ordering.
EU countries: Import regulations for plants coming from outside of the EU are too complicated for private individuals to manage. Therefore, Dragon Courier is the only shipping option we offer to all EU countries. It involves sending all EU orders to their agent in Amsterdam. The agent processes them through customs, pays all fees and taxes, and then hands them over to UPS, DHL, or DPD for final delivery within the EU. This is a pricier option, but it covers all payments, and you don’t need to do anything on your side.
Other countries For other shipped countries no importer permit is needed for any amount of plants.
